"Painting in a foreign country brings new challenges. You can't automatically reach for familiar colors. I experienced it last summer while painting in Toscana. The atmosphere was hazy and that changed the colors, the light and the shadows.

After getting frustrated, painting the Italian countryside California style, I relaxed, and started enjoying the softer hues and the harmony of colors that are less intense without sharp value differences.

I find painting trips to foreign lands stimulating which forces me to stretch and grow."
